คำคุณศัพท์คือ คำที่ใช้บรรยายคำอื่นๆ เช่น สูง ต่ำ ดำ เขียว สุข โศก สมหวัง และคำอื่นๆในทำนองนี้
ตำแหน่งที่มันอยู่
1. หน้าคำที่มันขยาย
A big car = รถคันใหญ่
An orange house = บ้านสีส้ม
Tall men = ชายรูปร่างสูง
2. หลังกริยา to be หรือ linking verb
They are smart. = พวกเขาฉลาด
The food looks expensive. = อาหารแลดูแพงนะ
คำวิเศษณ์ คือ คำที่ใช้ขยายกริยา เพื่อบอกอาการของกริยานั้นๆ เช่น He walks quickly.= เขาเดินอย่างรวดเร็ว
She talked nervously.= หล่อนพูดอย่างประหม่า
คำวิเศษณ์นั้นเกิดจากการนำเอาคำคุณศัพท์มาเติม –ly เพราะฉะนั้น หากผู้เรียนรู้คำคุณศัพท์ ก็สามารถสร้างคำวิเศษณ์เองได้ ดังนี้
คุณศัพท์ + ly
sad + ly = sadly อย่างเศร้า
quiet + ly = quietly = อย่างเงียบๆ
soft + ly = softly = อย่างแผ่วเบา หรือ อย่างอ่อนโยน
ถ้าคำคุณศัพท์ลงท้ายด้วย –y ให้เปลี่ยน –y เป็น i + ly เช่น
คำคุณศัพท์ +y เปลี่ยนเป็น ily
happy ----happi +ly = happily = อย่างมีความสุข
angry-----angri +ly = angrily อย่างโกรธ
คำคุณศัพท์ ลงท้ายด้วย le เปลี่ยนเป็น ly
หากคำคุณศัพท์ลงท้ายด้วย –le เปลี่ยนเป็น –ly เช่น
terrible ----terribly = อย่างเลวร้าย
capable ---capably = อย่างมีความสามารถ
อย่างไรก็ดี ที่ไหนมีกฎเกณฑ์ ก็ย่อมมีข้อยกเว้น มีคำอยู่กลุ่มหนึ่งที่ลงท้ายด้วย –ly แต่เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ กลุ่มนี้ต้องระวังเป็นพิเศษ (ชอบออกข้อสอบ) เช่น
friendly = ที่เป็นมิตร ที่เป็นกันเอง
เช่น He is friendly. = เขาเป็นกันเอง (ปกติ คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย –ly จะอยู่หลังกริยา to be ไม่ได้แต่คำนี้เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย –ly
lonely = ที่เหงา lively = ที่มีชีวิตชีวา
silly = ที่โง่เง่า early = เร็วกว่ากำหนด
และคำที่เกี่ยวกับเวลา เช่น
daily = ทุกวัน monthly = ทุกเดือน yearly = ทุกปี
weekly = ทุกสัปดาห์
เช่น This is a monthly magazine. = นี่คือนิตยสารที่ออกทุกเดือน
หน้าที่คำวิเศษณ์
1. ขยายกริยา
กริยา + adverb
เช่น
My father drove carefully.
พ่อฉันขับรถอย่างระมัดระวัง
กริยาคือ drove
คำวิเศษณ์คือ carefully
2. ขยายคุณศัพท์ (วิเศษณ์ + คุณศัพท์)
adverb + adjective
เช่น
The book is + extremely (วิเศษณ์) + good. (คุณศัพท์)
Adverb + adj
= หนังสือเล่มนี้ดีมาก
The traffic is terribly bad.
= การจราจรแย่มาก
3. ขยายคำวิเศษณ์
Adverb + adverb
เช่น
He walks very quickly.
very (วิเศษณ์) + quickly (วิเศษณ์)
= เขาเดินอย่างรวดเร็วมาก
กริยากลุ่มนี้ ห้ามใช้ adverb ตามหลังอย่างเด็ดขาด
คำที่มีรูปร่างหน้าตาเหมือนกันแต่เป็นได้ทั้งคำวิเศษณ์และคำคุณศัพท์ คำเหล่านี้ต้องสังเกตตำแหน่ง เช่น
fast แปลว่า หนักหรืออย่างหนัก สามารถเป็นได้ทั้งสองอย่าง เช่น He is a fast runner. = เขาเป็นนักวิ่งที่เร็ว (คุณศัพท์) adj + N ( fast ขยาย runner)
He runs fast. = เขาวิ่งเร็ว (คำวิเศษณ์) S + V + ADV (V + adv)
อีกคำหนึ่งที่พิษสงร้ายกาจเพราะชอบออกข้อสอบมาก
Hard, hardly
ตัวอย่าง He works hard. = เขาทำงานอย่างหนัก (S + V + adv.)
He is a hard worker. = เขาเป็นคนขยัน ( adj + N)
และคำ hardly มีความหมายเปลี่ยนไปเลย หมายถึง แทบจะไม่
เช่น He hardly works. = เขาแทบจะไม่ทำงาน
หลักการจำ : He works hard. = เขาทำงานหนัก กับ He hardly works. = เขาแทบจะไม่ค่อยทำงาน (ชอบอู้) (จำสองประโยคนี้ไว้แล้วเอาไประยุกต์ รับรองว่าจากนี้ไปจะไม่สับสนอีก)
คำยกเว้น: good = ดี well = อย่างดี
กริยาที่ทำหน้าที่เหมือน v. to be เช่น seem (ดูเหมือนว่า) appear (ดูเหมือนว่า) feel (รู้สึกว่า) taste (มีรสชาติ) look (ดูเหมือน) sound (ดูเหมือน) smell (มีกลิ่น)
คำกลุ่มนี้ หากสงสัย ให้ใช้กริยา to be เข้ามาแทนที่ เช่น
He looks (sad, sadly)
เราจะใช้ว่า เขาดูเศร้า จะใช้คำไหนดี ให้เอากริยา is/ am/ are มาแทนที่กริยา looks
แทนด้วย is แล้วแปล He is sad. ใช้ได้ แสดงว่า He looks sad. ถูก เพราะ He is sadly . แปลแล้วไม่รู้เรื่อง เขาอย่างเศร้า (มึนมาก) ไม่ได้ เป็นต้น
The food tastes (good / well).
หากสงสัยว่า จะใช้ good หรือ well ดี ให้แทนที่ด้วย กริยา is เป็น The food is good. แสดงว่าข้อนี้ถูก เป็น คำคุณศัพท์ แต่ well แปลว่า อย่างดี จึงใช้ไม่ได้
