การเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า คือ การเปรียบเทียบของสองสิ่ง อาจเป็นคน สัตว์ หรือ สิ่งของก็ได้ เราเปรียบเทียบเพื่อให้รู้ว่าสิ่งไหน คนไหน ตัวไหน มีอะไร เป็นอะไรมากกว่า ในภาษาไทย เราใช้คำว่า มากกว่า ส่วนในภาษาอังกฤษ คือ.....er than และ more….than
เช่น ภาษาไทย : เขาสูงกว่าฉัน
ภาษาอังกฤษ : He is taller than me. (I)
ภาษาไทย : ผู้หญิงคนนั้นสวยกว่าผู้หญิงคนนี้
ภาษาอังกฤษ : That girl is more beautiful than this one. (this girl)
ส่วนการเปรียบเทียบขั้นสุดก็คือ การเปรียบเทียบอะไรก็ตามที่มากกว่าสองสิ่งขึ้นไป ซึ่งตรงกับภาษาไทยว่า ที่สุด เช่น เขาสูงที่สุด เธอสวยที่สุด
ภาษาอังกฤษเขาใช้ว่า He is the tallest. She is the most beautiful.
ทีนี้ปัญหาที่จะเกิดขึ้นคือ รูปแบบ เมื่อเราเข้าใจแนวความคิดแล้ว ก็ต้องศึกษารูปแบบให้ถูกต้องด้วย หลักการเปลี่ยนคำที่ใช้เป็นขั้นกว่าและขั้นสุดมีดังต่อไปนี้
ขั้นกว่านั้น ถ้าเป็นคำพยางค์เดียวให้ใช้.....er than ส่วน more…..than ใช้กับคำที่มากกว่า 1 พยางค์
ขั้นสุดใช้ the…..est กับคำพยางค์เดียว ส่วน the most…..ใช้กับคำที่มากกว่า 1 พยางค์
ตัวอย่างคำที่เป็นพยางค์เดียว เช่น
ขั้นกว่า ขั้นสุด
tall สูง taller than สูงกว่า the tallest สูงที่สุด
short สั้น shorter than เตี้ยกว่า the shortest เตี้ยที่สุด
fast เร็ว faster than เร็วกว่า the fastest เร็วที่สุด
calm สงบ calmer than สงบกว่า the calmest สงบที่สุด
hard ยาก harder than ยากกว่า the hardest ยากที่สุด
ตัวอย่างคำสองพยางค์หรือมากกว่านั้น เช่น

อย่างช้า อย่างช้ากว่า อย่างช้าที่สุด
comfortable more comfortable than the most comfortable
สบาย สบายกว่า สะดวกสบายที่สุด
expensive more expensive than the most expensive
แพง แพงกว่า แพงที่สุด
boring more boring than the most boring
น่าเบื่อ น่าเบื่อกว่า น่าเบื่อที่สุด
excited more excited than the most excited
รู้สึกตื่นเต้น รู้สึกตื่นเต้นกว่า รู้สึกตื่นเต้นที่สุด
honest more honest than the most honest
ซื่อสัตย์ ซื่อสัตย์กว่า ซื่อสัตย์ที่สุด
consistently more consistently than the most consistently
อย่างคงเส้นคงวา อย่างคงเส้นคงวากว่า อย่างคงเส้นคงวาที่สุด
กลุ่มคำที่เป็นสระเสียงสั้น ให้เขียนพยัญชนะตัวสุดท้ายอีกหนึ่งครั้งก้อนเติมความเป็นขั้นกว่าและขั้นสุดลงไป เช่น
ขั้นกว่า ขั้นสุด
big ใหญ่ bigger ใหญ่กว่า the biggest ใหญ่ที่สุด
red แดง redder แดงกว่า the reddest แดงที่สุด
thin บาง, ผอม thinner บางกว่า, ผอมกว่า the thinnest ผอมที่สุด
hot ร้อน hotter ร้อนกว่า the hottest ร้อนที่สุด
อย่าลืมว่า เราต้องใช้คำให้ถูกตามกริยา ขอย้ำ หากกริยาเป็นกริยา to be ก็ใช้คำคุณศัพท์ หากกริยาไม่ใช่ to be ให้เราใช้กลุ่มคำที่มี –ly ไว้ก่อนจะปลอดภัย ถึงแม้ว่ามันจะมีคำบางคำที่ยกเว้นบ้าง เช่น early อย่างเร็ว (เกิดหรือมาก่อนกำหนด) และขั้นกว่า คือ earlier, เช่น
He is quicker than her.
เขาเร็วกว่าหล่อน
He runs more quickly than her.
เขาวิ่งเร็วกว่าหล่อน
ที่ใดมีกฎก็ย่อมมีข้อยกเว้น
1. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย “y” ให้เปลี่ยน “y” เป็น “i” ก่อนเติม er หรือ est เช่น
ขั้นกว่า ขั้นสุด
dry drier than the driest
แห้ง แห้งกว่า แห้งที่สุด
happy happier than the happiest
ที่มีความสุข สุขมากกว่า สุขมากที่สุด
friendly friendlier than the friendliest
ที่เป็นกันเอง เป็นกันเองมากกว่า เป็นกันเองมากที่สุด
easy easier than the easiest
ง่าย ง่ายกว่า ง่ายที่สุด
2. คำสองพยางค์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย –ly, -er, -ow ให้เติม er หรือ est ได้เลย เช่น
ขั้นกว่า ขั้นสุด
narrow narrower than the narrowest
แคบ แคบกว่า แคบที่สุด
gentle gentler than the gentlest
อ่อนโยน อ่อนโยนกว่า อ่อนโยนที่สุด
clever cleverer than the cleverest
ฉลาด ฉลาดกว่า ฉลาดที่สุด
และกลุ่มคำนี้เป็นกลุ่มที่เปลี่ยนรูปไปเลย คำเหล่านี้ได้แก่
ขั้นกว่า ขั้นสุด
good / well better the best
ดี ดีกว่า ดีที่สุด
bad / badly worse the worst
เลว เลวกว่า เลวที่สุด
far farther / further the farthest / furthest
ไกล ไกลกว่า ไกลที่สุด
old older / elder the oldest / eldest
แก่หรือเปล่า แก่กว่า แก่ที่สุด
much / many more the most
มาก มากกว่า มากที่สุด
little less the least
น้อย น้อยกว่า น้อยที่สุด
Note : “farther / the farthest” ใช้บรรยายระยะทางเท่านั้น
ตัวอย่าง : มานะสามารถวิ่งได้ไกลกว่าเพื่อนของเขา
Mana can run father than his friend.
“further / the furthest” ใช้บรรยายสิ่งอื่นที่ไม่ใช่ระยะทาง
ตัวอย่าง : มานะสามารถเรียนได้ไกลกว่าเพื่อนของเขา (สูงกว่า)
Mana can study further than his friend.
“older / the oldest” ใช้บรรยายสิ่งที่เก่าแก่
ตัวอย่าง : สุภาแก่กว่าทัศนีย์
Supa is older than Tasanee.
หนังสือเล่มนี้เก่ากว่าหนังสือเล่มนั้น
This book is older than that one. (that book)
“elder / the eldest” ใช้บรรยายความแก่ในครอบครัว
ตัวอย่าง : พิชัยเป็นลูกชายคนโตในครอบครัว

เมื่อผู้เรียนสามารถฝึกเขียนขั้นกว่าได้อย่างถูกต้องแล้ว หากต้องการเน้นว่า มากกว่ามากหรือน้อยกว่ามาก สำคัญกว่ามาก หรือสำคัญน้อยกว่ามาก หรือสวยกว่ามาก น่ารักกว่ามาก เลวกว่ามาก หรือดีกว่ามาก เราสามารถเน้นย้ำได้โดยใช้คำวิเศษณ์จ่อไปนี้มาช่วย นั่นคือ much / far / a lot ทั้งหมดมีความหมายว่า อย่างมาก เช่น

= รถยนต์คันนี้แพงกว่ารถยนต์คันนั้นมาก
