พาตัวเองออกไปจากปัญหา แล้วจะเห็นโอกาส
คำว่า opportunity อาพเผอะ (เฉ่อร์) เหนอะที่ หมายถึง โอกาส เช่น
I don’t have an opportunity to do that.
= ฉันไม่มีโอกาสทำสิ่งนั้น
He took the opportunity to study overseas.
= เขาใช้โอกาสไปเรียนต่อเมืองนอก
การจะบอกว่าใช้โอกาส เราสามารถใช้ to use / to take an opportunity ได้เลย แต่ถ้าต้องการสีสัน สามารถใช้ว่า คว้า หรือฉวย กริยาคือ to grab / to seize an opportunity และหากพลาดโอกาสก็ to miss an opportunity เช่น
We should grab the opportunity to work on this project.
= เราควรคว้าโอกาสในการทำโครงการนี้
We should give everybody an opportunity to do whatever they think to discover what they really want.
= เราควรให้โอกาสกับทุกคนที่จะทำในสิ่งที่ตัวเองคิดเพื่อค้นหาว่าตัวเองต้องการอะไร
และหากโอกาสนั้นเป็นโอกาสที่ดีและในชีวิตเรามีเพียงครั้งเดียว เราจะใช้สำนวนว่า the opportunity of a lifetime เช่น
Studying overseas is the opportunity of a lifetime.
= การไปเรียนต่อเมืองนอกเป็นโอกาสที่ดีในชีวิต
Please give me an opportunity.
= ได้โปรดให้โอกาสฉันด้วย
a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity = โอกาสที่มีเพียงครั้งเดียวในชีวิต เช่น
Visiting Paris is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him.
= การไปเที่ยวฝรั่งเศสเป็นโอกาสเดียวในชีวิตสำหรับเขา
คำว่า once แม้จะขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ “o” แต่ไม่ได้ออกเสียงเป็น “อ อ่าง” เราจึงต้องใช้ “a” ไม่ใช่ “an” แต่ถ้าเป็น opportunity ต้องใช้ “an” เพราะสระ “o” ออกเสียงเป็นเสียง อ อ่าง คือ อาพ
คำว่า an opportunist หมายถึง คนที่ฉวยโอกาส
Don’t believe that guy! He is just an opportunist.
= อย่าไปเชื่อไอ้หมอนั่น เขาเป็นนักฉวยโอกาส
Most politicians and businessmen are opportunists.
= นักการเมืองและนักธุรกิจเป็นพวกฉวยโอกาส
