การยิ้มคือวิธีที่ดีที่สุดที่จะเผชิญกับทุกปัญหา
เอาชนะความกลัว และซ่อนความเจ็บปวด
สำนวน
คำว่า a smile = รอยยิ้ม ส่วน to smile = ยิ้มเช่น
He smiled at me. = เขาส่งยิ้มมาให้ฉัน
แต่เวลาต้องการจะบอกว่า ยิ้มให้กับตัวเอง เราต้องใช้ว่า to smile to oneself เช่น
He smiled to himself.
= เขายิ้มให้กับตัวเอง
I always smile to myself when she looks at the picture.
= ฉันมักจะยิ้มให้ตัวเองตอนที่ดูรูป
She smiles to herself when her boyfriend calls her.
= หล่อนยิ้มให้ตัวเองตอนที่แฟนโทรมา
และถ้าต้องการจะบรรยายว่า ยิ้มแบบยินยอม หรือยิ้มแบบให้กำลังใจก็สามารถใช้สำนวนต่อไปนี้
Dad smiled his approval.
= พ่อยิ้มแบบเห็นด้วย
Mom always smile encouragement.
= แม่มักจะยิ้มให้กำลังใจ
เราลองมาดูคำว่า smile ที่เป็นคำนามในโครงสร้าง a …. smile หากต้องการจะบรรยายลักษณะการยิ้มแบบไหน สามารถเอาคำคุณศัพท์มาใช้ในโครงสร้างนี้ได้
A warm smile = ยิ้มแบบอบอุ่น a friendly smile = ยิ้มแบบกันเอง a wicked smile = ยิ้มแบบชั่วร้าย a grim smile = ยิ้มแบบแหยๆ a lovely smile = ยิ้มแบบน่ารัก a knowing smile = ยิ้มแบบรู้กัน (ความลับ) เช่น

= เขายิ้มให้ฉันแบบเป็นกันเองตอนพบกันครั้งแรก
to face every problem =เผชิญกับทุกปัญหา คำว่า to face + สิ่งใด หมายถึง เผชิญหน้ากับสิ่งนั้น เช่น
We have to face the truth.
= เราต้องเผชิญกับความจริง
He has to face the reality.
= เขาต้องเผชิญกับความจริง (ต้องยอมรับความจริงก่อน)
Thailand is facing the economic problem.
= ประเทศไทยกำลังเผชิญกับปัญหาเศรษฐกิจ
บางครั้งเราอาจไปเจอสำนวน to be faced with มีความหมายเหมือนกับคำว่า to face แต่จะใช้กับสถานการณ์ที่ไม่ดี หรือปัญหา เช่น
He is faced with the financial trouble. = He faces the financial trouble. = เขาเจอกับปัญหาทางการเงิน (เขามีปัญหาเรื่องเงิน)
He is facing the biggest challenge of his life.
= เขากำลังเจอกับสิ่งที่ท้าทายที่สุดของชีวิต
He is faced with the biggest challenge of his life.
She is faced with her personal problem. = She faces her personal problem. = หล่อนเจอกับปัญหาส่วนตัว
คำว่า face ยังหมายถึง ไม่กล้าไปเจอหน้า ไม่กล้าไปพบ เพราะรู้สึกผิดที่ทำไม่ดีใส่เช่น
I can’t face her since I treated her badly.
= ฉันไม่กล้าเผชิญหน้าเธอเพราะทำไม่ดีใส่เธอไว้
และสุดท้ายก็คือ หันหน้าไปทาง เช่น
This room faces the sea.
= ห้องนี้หันหน้าเข้าทะเล
I want to a room facing the mountain.
= อยากได้ห้องที่หันหน้าไปทางภูเขา จะใช้ (that faces ก็ได้)
She wants a room facing the swimming pool.
= หล่อนอยากได้ห้องที่หันหน้าไปทางสระว่ายน้ำ ( that faces)
I want a room that faces the park.
= อยากได้ห้องที่หันหน้าไปสวนสาธารณะ
I don’t like that room because it faces the wall.
= ฉันไม่ชอบห้องนั้นเพราะหันหน้าไปทางผนัง
His house faces to the north.
= บ้านเขาหันหน้าไปทางทิศเหนือ
I want the bedroom that faces to the east.
= อยากได้ห้องที่หันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันออก
to crush = บดขยี้ หรือทำลายจนสิ้นซาก เช่น
His leg was crushed in the accident.
= เท้าของเขาถูกบดขยี้ (เละ)ในอุบัติเหตุ
He crushed his cigarette in an ashtray while talking on the phone.
= เขาขยี้บุหรี่ลงในที่เขี่ยบุหรี่ระหว่างคุยโทรศัพท์
Coconuts are crushed to extract oil.
= มะพร้าวถูกบดเพื่อเอามาสกัดทำน้ำมัน
เพราะฉะนั้น เมื่อเอามาใช้ที่ไหน ให้คิดถึงความหมายนี้ไว้
My close friend’s death has crushed my hope.
= การตายของเพื่อนซี๊ทำให้ความหวังของฉันพังทลาย (บดขยี้ความหวัง) เพราะฉะนั้น to crush every fear จึงเห็นภาพว่า บดขยี้ความกลัวทั้งหมด นั่นเอง
To hide every pain = ซ่อน หรือปกปิด
คำว่า to hide ตรงกับภาษาไทยคือ แอบไว้ หรือซ่อนไว้ ใช้ได้หมด เช่น
She tried to hide the robber from the police.
= หล่อนพยายามซ่อนตัวนักปล้นจากตำรวจ
• He hid himself under the bed.
• = เขาแอบอยู่ใต้เตียง
และสามารถนำมาใช้กับคำนามที่จับต้องไมได้ เช่น ความกลัว (fear) ความสนใจ (interest , enthusiasm ) ความวิตกกังวล (anxiety) ได้หมด
She smiles to hide her sorrow.
= หล่อนยิ้มเพื่อกลบเกลือนความเสียใจ
He hides his excitement by looking at the floor.
= เขาซ่อนความตื่นเต้นด้วยการมองไปที่พื้น
She laughed to hide her nervousness.
= หล่อนหัวเราะเพื่อกลบเกลื่อนอาการประหม่า (ซ่อน)
Look at me and tell me what you are hiding.
= ไหน มองหน้าซิ แล้วบอกมาว่าแกปิดอะไรอยู่
I swear, I don’t have anything to hide from you.
= ขอสาบาน ไม่มีอะไรจริงๆ
You can ask me anything. I have nothing to hide. = อยากถามอะไร ก็ถามมา ฉันไม่มีอะไรจะปกปิด อยู่แล้ว (บริสุทธิ์ใจ)
และ hide-and-seek ก็คือ เล่นซ่อนหา เช่น Children like to play hide-and seek. = เด็กๆชอบเล่นซ่อนหา
The bushes in the park is a great place for hide-and –seek.
= พุ่มไม้ในสวนสาธารณะเป็นที่ที่ดีมากสำหรับเล่นซ่อนแอบ
