ความหมาย : กำลังได้รับความนิยมอย่างสูง หรือประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมากในระยะเวลาอันสั้น เหมือนกับการอยู่บนยอดของคลื่น แต่เขาเอามาเปรียบเทียบให้เหมือนกับคลื่น 

คำว่า crest หมายถึง จุดสูงสุดของสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งเมื่อมันมารวมตัวกันแล้ว ก็คือ กำลังขี่ไปอยู่บนยอดคลื่น หากจะใช้ว่า He/ She / is very successful.
แต่หากจะใช้ว่า He/ She is riding on the crest of a wave. ก็ทำให้ภาษามีชีวิตชีวาขึ้น

= เพื่อนซี๊จะแต่งงานเดือนหน้าและก็จะได้รับการเลื่อนตำแหน่งด้วย เขาประสบความสำเร็จมากจริง

เวลาเราตัดสินใจเรื่องอะไร ตัดสินใคร เราจำเป็นต้องมีข้อมูลให้ครบด้านก่อน
สำนวน That’s not the whole story. นั่นไม่ใช่ข้อมูลทั้งหมด หรือ เล่ามาให้หมดซิ หรือ I need the whole story. หรือ หากเรื่องที่ใครเขาเล่ามาให้ฟัง มันเป็นเพียงเสี้ยวหนึ่งของเรื่องทั้งหมด เราก็สามารถใช้ว่า That’s only part of the story.

เป็นสำนวนที่ใช้เกริ่นนำก่อนจะเล่าเข้าสู่เรื่องนั้นๆ แปลเป็นไทยว่า เรื่องมันมีอยู่ ตรงกับภาษาอังกฤษว่า The story goes that…….ตามด้วยสิ่งที่ต้องการจะเล่า เช่น เรื่องมันมีอยู่ว่า เพื่อนฉันอกหักอีกแล้ว The story goes that my friend was broken-hearted again.

และท้ายสุดก็คือ เรื่องใดที่เราอยากให้มันจบ เรียกว่า งานนี้ไม่อยากพูดไม่อยากโต้เถียงแล้ว ให้ใช้ว่า End of Story ก็เป็นอันรู้กันว่า ไม่พูดแล้วนะ เรื่องนี้น่ะ

คำว่า story มีที่ใช้น่าสนใจนำสนวนต่างๆ

เราจะบอกว่าเรื่องไหนโกหก เราก็พูดไปว่า What a story! I don’t believe a word of it. 

หมายถึง เรื่องโกหกทั้งนั้น ฉันไม่เชื่อแม้แต่นิดเดียว

หรือ You invented a story against your opponents. = นี่แกมาแต่งเรื่องใส่ร้ายฝ่ายตรงข้าม

สำนวน It’s the same old story. หมายถึง เรื่องเดิมๆอีกแล้ว 

ฉะนั้น เมื่อเกิดความรู้สึกเช่นที่ว่า เวลามีใครมาเล่าเรื่องที่เล่าไปแล้วแล้วมันก็น่าเบื่อ เอาไปใช้บรรยายได้เลย

หมายถึง ไม่มีพันธะ ไม่มีข้อผูกมัดอะไรทั้งสิ้น เช่น ทุน หรือ การให้อะไรกับใคร แบบไม่มีเงื่อนไขหรือข้อแม้อะไรทั้งสิ้น เช่น

- I am very glad to get a scholarship with no strings attached. 
- = ฉันดีใจมากที่ได้รับทุนโดยไม่มีเงื่อนไขใดๆ (ไม่มีอะไรมาผูกมัดด้วย)

- He got sponsorship with strings attached.
- = เขาได้รับการสนับสนุนโดยที่มีเงื่อนไข

- There are no strings attached to the scholarship. Those who receive it don’t have to stay in this company after graduation.
- = ทุนการศึกษานี้ไม่มีเงื่อนไขผูกมัด ใครก็ตามที่ได้รับทุนไม่ต้องอยู่ทำงานชดใช้

หมายถึง เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องนั้นๆ เช่น

= เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องการเมืองแล้ว มันน่าเบื่อนะ

= เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องเงินแล้ว เราต้องใช้จ่ายอย่างฉลาด (รู้คุณค่า)

= พูดถึงเรื่องเศรษฐกิจ มันค่อยๆดีขึ้น
