สำนวนน่าจำเกี่ยวกับ dream ก็คือ to be a dream come true. ฝันที่เป็นจริง เช่น

For me, studying overseas is a dream come true. = สำหรับฉันแล้ว การได้ไปเรียนต่อเมืองนอกคือฝันที่เป็นจริง

Leading a peaceful life in the countryside is a dream come true for him.

= สำหรับคนส่วนใหญ่แล้ว การได้มีชีวิตที่สงบในต่างจังหวัดเป็นฝันที่เป็นจริงของเขา

 คำว่า to remove หมายถึง เอาออกไป หรือกำจัด เช่น

Remove all the chairs.

= เอาเก้าอี้พวกนี้ออกไป

The detergent is used to remove blood stains.

= ผงซักฟอกใช้ขจัดคราบเลือดพวกนี้

The HR department wants to remove some workers to save cost.

= ทางฝ่ายบุคลากรต้องการเอาพนักงานออกเพื่อลดค่าใช้จ่าย

แต่หากต้องการจะเจาะจงไปอีกว่า เอาออกไปจากอะไร ก็สามารถใช้ from ซึ่งตรงกับภาษาไทยเลย เช่น

Please remove the old books from the library.

 = ช่วยเอาหนังสือเก่าๆออกไปจากห้องสมุด

Dad wants to remove useless clothes from the cabinet.

= พ่ออยากจะโละเสื้อผ้าที่ไม่ได้ใช้ออกไปจากตู้

คำว่า unused จะหมายถึง ที่ยังใหม่แบบไม่ได้ใช้ก็ได้ เพราะฉะนั้น unused airline tickets = ตั๋วที่ยังไม่ได้ใช้ตอนนี้

To replace ก็คือ แทนที่ เช่น

We need to replace the carpets and curtains.

 = เราจำเป็นต้องหาพรมและม่านใหม่

The coach has replaced him on the team.

= ผู้ฝึกสอนเอาเขามาแทนคนในทีม

Before the long trip, we need to replace tires.

The company will replace the managers who have resigned.

 = ทางบริษัทจะจ้างผู้บริหารใหม่แทนผู้บริหารที่ลาออกไป

คำนามคือ replacement หมายถึง การแทนที่ หรือคนที่จะมาแทนที่ เช่น

It is difficult to find a replacement for an experienced manager like him.

= ยากนะที่จะหาคนมาแทนผู้จัดการที่มีประสบการณ์เหมือนเขา  

We need a replacement because many clients complain.

= เราจำเป็นต้องหาคนมาแทนเพราะลูกค้าโวยวายเพียบ

The company will seek a replacement for its finance manager.

= บริษัทจะหาคนมาแทนผู้บริหารทางการเงิน

และเมื่อเป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้ ก็จะหมายถึง การแทนที่เช่น

ศัพท์สำนวน

To go forward ไปต่อไป ไปข้างหน้า อ่านว่า (ฟอร์) เวิร์ด เห็นที่ไหนคือ ไปข้างหน้า คำตรงข้ามคือ backwards ถอยหลัง เช่น Look forward not backwards.

= มองไปข้างหน้าอย่ามองไปข้างหลัง คำว่า backwards มี “s” หมายถึง ย้อนกลับ เราจะเจอในสำนวนว่า ย้อนหลัง เช่น Count backwards from 3. นับถอยหลัง 3 ,2,1

ต้องการจะบอกว่า นับถอยหลังจากจำนวนอะไรก็ใส่ลงไป

คำว่า forward (s) เขียนได้สองแบบ ส่วน backwards มี “s”

คำว่า forward ที่เราใช้กันอยู่ในวงการธุรกิจก็คือ ส่งต่อไปให้ เช่น ช่วย forward เมล์ไปให้คนโน้นคนนี้ด้วย เช่น Don’t forget to forward my mail to all employees.

= อย่าลืมส่งเมล์ต่อไปให้กับพนักงานทุกคนด้วย

= ช่วยส่งต่อเมล์มาให้ฉันด้วย

If you have anything new, please forward it to me. = ถ้ามีอะไรคืบหน้า ก็ส่งต่อมาให้ด้วย

และสำนวนที่ลืมไม่ได้คือ to look forward to + v ing หรือคำนามก็ได้ (สำนวนนี้ในเชิงธุรกิจใช้บ่อยมากและชอบออกข้อสอบด้วย) จำไปเลยว่า I look forward to hearing from you. = รอข่าวคราวจากคุณอยู่

He looks forward to the trip. = เขารอไปเที่ยว (อย่างตื่นเต้น อย่างใจจดใจจ่อ)

To lead your life with purpose = ดำเนินชีวิตอย่างมีเป้าหมาย คำว่า purpose อ่านว่า (เพอร์) เผิส หมายถึง จุดหมาย เป้าหมาย ความมุ่งมั่นที่จะทำอะไรให้ได้ในชีวิต เขาจึงบอกว่า It is essential for us to have a sense of purpose.

= นับเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นที่เราต้องมีชีวิตอย่างมีเป้าหมาย

= เธอไม่มีวันเข้าใจความหมายของคำว่ารัก

= ฉันเข้าใจความรู้สึกของความโดดเดี่ยว

The word “Quit” is not in my vocabulary.

= คำว่ายอมแพ้นะเหรอ สะกดไม่เป็นหรอก (ไม่รู้จัก)

The word “ fear” is not in his vocabulary.

= คำว่ากลัว เขาสะกดไม่เป็นหรอก (กล้านั่นเอง)

To find faults with + คนใดคนหนึ่ง หมายถึง จับผิดเกี่ยวกับคนๆนั้น หรือวิจารณ์

เช่น

= แฟนชอบจับผิดฉัน

He gets bored with his mom because she finds faults with everything he does.

สำนวน to be someone’s fault หมายถึง เป็นความผิดของคนๆนั้น เช่น

สำนวน there’s something wrong with something = มีอะไรผิดปกติเกี่ยวกับสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง เช่น

= ไม่รู้ว่าคอมพิวเตอร์ทำไมไม่ทำงาน ต้องมีอะไรไม่ปกติแน่ๆ

A double fault = การเสิร์ฝลูกพลาดสองครั้งในกีฬาเทนนิส

behind someone's back= ไม่ให้คนๆนั้นรู้ หรือลับหลัง เช่น

She likes to gossip behind my back.

 = หล่อนชอบนินทาฉันลับหลัง

To lead to + สิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง หมายถึง ทำให้เกิด ใช้เหมือน to result in เช่น

= ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ทำให้เกิดนวัตกรรม

คำว่า destination หมายถึง จุดหมายปลายทาง
